Image title	Paper conservator Jennifer Evers cleans pages from the diary of Josiah Smith, written in 1780-81, in the Conservation Division, February 24, 2017. Smith was a South Carolina merchant and patriot politician who was captured by the British during the Revolutionary War. His 425-page journal describes his captivity, including confinement on a British prison ship and transportation to St. Augustine, Florida, and includes extensive commentary on British military policy in the South, on conditions in the British province of East Florida, and on the British treatment of American and French prisoners of war.
