Things to add/change

This discussion page was started in July 2014 to collect ideas for improving the chapter. It includes the suggestions offered by the BPG Publications Committee, PCC Task Force in 2007-2009. Please feel free to add your own suggestions for improvement.

  • Add discussion of arriving at desired pulp tone by mixing pre-cast pulp in primary colors.

At the Annual Meeting in 2015, a discussion group consisting of Denise Stockman, Anne Downey, Jessica Crane and Amy Hughes was formed to brainstorm ideas to update this chapter.

GENERAL:

  • Expand "Purpose" statement.
  • Some materials are outdated.
  • A lot of statements can be elaborated. They might be mis-understood in over-simplified form.
  • This section should be thought of as an aesthetic activity. In contrast, "Filling by Lining" is stabilization.
  • Overall I agree, but I still think the existing section about filling by lining is important on this page. You can add toned tissue during a lining still or have an overall toned lining paper as a visual compensation technique, which still falls under this page I feel. The more options on the page, the better --Sandrine Blais (talk) 17:34, 28 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Language can be updated. Specific phrases to reconsider: "rotating shaft tool"; "fine linen handkerchief" and "sugar for toning".
  • This information in this section will have a lot of overlap with Inpainting. Rather than merging, links can be added between the two.
  • Materials can be integrated into a discussion of technique instead of in list form.
  • I think a discussion could be good, but rather than removing the list I might prioritize adding photos or linking to the materials and equipment page --Sandrine Blais (talk) 17:34, 28 November 2025 (UTC)
  • A section on digital fills should be added.
  • A section on temporary/ easily removable fills should be added.

  • Expand the 'purpose' section to include more considerations: when/ why
  • Remove the section on overall lining section.
  • Reconsider this technique in fills shaped by dry western paper: "Teasing fibers at the loss edge of artifact..."
  • Coffee and tea are no longer used for toning. Toning through heat is no longer used.
  • Section on toning paper should be fleshed out further, esp. regarding Golden fluid acrylics, etc. --Fopferman (talk) 21:06, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Relatedly, link these media to Inpainting page --Fopferman (talk) 21:06, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

I would argue that [toasted] cellulose powder fills are not pulp fills, and should be moved out of that section --Fopferman (talk) 21:03, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

I agree with you --Sandrine Blais (talk) 16:46, 13 January 2026 (UTC)

Headers that could be added at some point in the future with content

These sections were either on the page or on the discussion page and were empty, so I deleted them but wanted to preserve them here: Special Considerations, Temporary/ Easily Removable, Structurally Unattached, Overlay --Sandrine Blais (talk) 16:37, 28 November 2025 (UTC)

Clean up of talk page

  • This whole talk page needs to be compared to the actual page to see which version to keep, then the talk page needs to be cleaned up --Sandrine Blais (talk) 18:34, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
  • In November 2025, there was a re-organization of the main page planned on the Talk page, which I agreed with overall. I implemented the changes that were planned here and deleted the draft from the Talk page, in order to see people's suggestions more easily. --Sandrine Blais (talk) 17:34, 28 November 2025 (UTC)

Digital fills

I added a whole section about digital fills using a project I did a few years ago. I feel like this maybe should exist as a blogpost instead and be linked here, so this section might change in the near future --Sandrine Blais (talk) 18:34, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
